Dr. Tchero Huidi's systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of telerehabilitation for stroke survivors, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.
Telerehabilitation is an emerging technology that allows medical rehabilitation care to be delivered remotely. In this systematic review and meta-analysis published in October 2018, Dr. Tchero Huidi and colleagues investigated the efficacy of telerehabilitation in poststroke patients.
Following a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, and Web of Science, 15 studies involving 1,339 patients were included in the review, with 12 contributing to the pooled meta-analysis. The combined results showed no statistically significant differences between telerehabilitation and usual care for the Barthel Index, Berg Balance Scale, Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity score, or the mobility subscale of the Stroke Impact Scale. However, health-related quality of life, caregiver strain, and patient satisfaction were comparable between groups, and one study reported a US $867 cost reduction with telerehabilitation.
Dr. Tchero Huidi concludes that telerehabilitation is a suitable alternative to usual poststroke rehabilitation care, particularly in remote or underserved areas, while calling for larger trials to confirm benefits in quality of life and cost-effectiveness.
